The 2008 Summer Olympics - Where Are You Staying?

The 2008 summer Olympics will soon be upon us, and many sporting enthusiasts from around the world have been waiting 4 years for these games to come around. Celebrations will officially commence on August the 8th, this year with the opening ceremony kicking off at that unforgettable time of 08:08:08 pm CST (Central Standard Time ) at Beijing's National Stadium.

It all begins (and ends) at the Beijing National Stadium, which is affectionately dubbed the "bird's nest" because of its innovative design and grid formation. The stadium will host all the main track and field events. It's reported that this sporting arena expects to seat up to 91,000 spectators during the Olympics games, but this is to be an exception and after the Olympics are over, the seating capacity is said to be reduced to no more than 80,000 max.

Although the Bird's Nest Stadium will be the main focal point for the games, there will obviously be other competitions which are held in other places such as sailing and football to name but a couple.

Should you go to these Games

The countdown to the games has not been without controversy though, and there are many who still think it was a bad move giving the Olympics to China because of concerns regarding human rights violations, and none more so than the recent upsets regarding the Tibetan issue. There are others who think that all sports and musical events should be left out of politics all together, but the Olympics have a long history of being exploited to raise political arguments, and the 2008 summer Olympics at Beijing is certainly no exception.

No matter who you are or whatever your views, there's no escaping the fact that the Olympic Games is the greatest show on earth, and despite all the muscle flexing and war or words which seem to precede so many of these events over the years, once the official, opening ceremony is underway, it's all about the games, the athletes who have trained so very hard to qualify, and the countries they represent in the good natured, though highly competitive, spirit of sportsmanship.
